The type of stockyard and whether it serves as a blending bed or a buffer storage area will choose which stacker to use. Material is fed onto the Stacker by a Tripper Car on the yard conveyor. A variety of alternative counterweight configurations and luffing systems can be added to stacker booms. A rope hoist or a hydraulic system is the lifting mechanism. The stacking method is programmed into the PLC of the stacker. While the Strata and Windrow stacking modes require a luffing and slewing Stacker boom, the Chevron and Cone Shell stacking modes just require a travelling and luffing Stacker.
Stackers are offered for handling capacities of between 100 t/h and more than 5,000 t/h.
